Building a great team doesn’t happen overnight. If you’ve been part of a great team or created a great team, we know the amazing feeling of having that team. We know the amazing feeling of being part of it and seeing its success, but when we’re in a team that is not functioning well, sometimes we’re not sure of how we got there.
Today I want to talk about one thing we can do to actually start building a great team.
We Need To Focus On The Why.
Why does the business exist? Why does the team exist? Why are we here? If we can keep our team focused on the why, the purpose of the actual business, we actually keep them focused on the core things that they need to be focused on today. A lot of times we can get so bogged down in the day to day tasks of things, the grind, that we actually forget why business exists.
It’s really important, if you’re part of a large or a small organization, that you keep talking to your team about the purpose of the whole business. Why do we exist? 99% of retail businesses, the reason why they exist is to serve the customer and create an amazing experience that helps them in some shape or form. If we can get that focus back for our team and we can then start to link what they’re doing each day into that purpose.
We need to focus on the why and keep our team focused, especially during tough times when budgets may be cut, when staffing may be cut, when there’s things that are happening that may be aren’t conducive to a happy team, we need to keep our team focused on the why.
My tip for today: To build a really happy team, start with the why. Why are we here? Why does the business exist, and why are they important to that team to make it happen?
