In this week’s blog, let’s talk about Delegation. Delegation can be our worst enemy or our most valuable friend depending on our own view and ability to execute it.

When we want to delegate to one of team one of the first things we need to answer for any team member that we’re delegating to is the, “Why me?” Why have you chosen me? Why do I need to do this? The why, why, why.

It’s really important that we not only answer why the task is important, but we also answer the person why they’re being chosen to do this task. A lot of times, our team members actually think we’re just giving them something because we don’t want to do it or there is no one else. Now, in some cases, that may be a reality, that they are the only person on today. But in a lot of cases, we have actually chosen them. This is why we’re getting them to do the task. So, we need to be really clear about why we have chosen them. This doesn’t need to be a crazy long draw out conversation, rather the more direct and clear we can be about the WHY the quicker our team will jump on board because of the feeling of being valued they receive from knowing why.

And we also need to let them know how this fits into their own path and their learning in their role. What is in it for me? Is the first question our team has when we start discussing delegating a role or even a task. Knowing that you have thought about the task, the delegation and how they can learn and grow from this creates trust in you as the leader. This in turn creates a space where in the future following your lead becomes easier and more accepted because of the history of you as the leader looking out for them and their interests not just the business. It doesn’t matter what the role is, whether I am cooking fries at McDonald’s, or whether I am a leader in a Fortune 500 company, I want to know that someone has a plan for me. I want to know that this task fits into something else. So, when we’re talking delegation, we need to answer the question of, well, why me? And on the sidelines of that answer, okay, well, this is how it fits in.
