To create a great team that works like clockwork you need to be able to delegate but a lot of leaders are not sure how to do this effectively. There are a few Do’s and Don’t’s that can make or break your delegation skills:
Don’t just delegate the stuff you hate to do – the team know the things you don’t love to do and only delegating these tasks can create a feeling of giving the scraps and not that you want to develop you team to be the best they can be.
Don’t delegate the same task to multiple people – other than creating confusion and wasting time this makes it seem like busy work for everyone as it doesn’t seem well thought out on your behalf as the leader.
Don’t be blasé about the standard you require – sometimes when we ask our team to do something we get caught up in the fact that they are helping us, remember as the leaders you are setting the standard so if it appears you don’t care or it doesn’t matter then they is the standard you are setting with the team. Be okay to admit you have high standards and they will rise to meet them.
Do explain the WHY – The biggest reason why teams don’t give the same effort you do with a task is they have no idea of the WHY this is so important or the affect it has on the business as a whole so make sure this is the first thing you explain.
Do plan delegation into developement – the best delegation becomes stepping stones in the team members developement, of the team can see that you have thought and planned the task into their development not only will this increase their motivation but also leave them wanting more. When planning break down the tasks that need to be done into bite size chunks that are more manageable when learning something new.
Do always give praise and opportunities – delegation is not done when the task is started the follow up piece is key to keeping the employee engaged and wanting more but don’t just give praise look for the opportunity for the employee to improve for next time as this will give them more goals to strive for but still let them know you appreciate all the effort they put in.
