I talk to leaders everyday and they all say the same thing, “I wish I had a motivated team”. Most don’t know where to start.
Motivation for me is like ABC
A – About them – Too many conversations from leaders start with what they want, what they think, I I I…. The first rule of motivating a team is knowing about them. What do they like, don’t like, family, what do they enjoy on the weekends and what gets them out of bed to come and work in your team everyday!
These are the keys to finding that switch to tap into their motivation and get your team to love their work and you as a leader to give them what they need, but you don’t know any of that unless you start making conversations about them.
B – Be You – So many leaders not only put on a uniform to go to their business they also put on a fake “leadership” persona to go with it. Have you even met someone and felt something was off but wasn’t sure what it was? More often than not, it was because the person was trying to be something or someone else!
There is no such thing as the perfect leader and when you hide who you are to try and be this mythical person it makes it very difficult for people to trust you and this is where this feeling comes in. BUT when you be you and let your personality and your passion shine through people connect with this as you are no longer a figure head but a real person. This is when we start to build a relationship with our team on a deeper level and build trust so your team now respects you and wants to follow you.
C – Create opportunity consistently – Once you know what motivates them and you have built the relationship you need to create opportunity for your team to do what they love consistently. You know how your mother told you to eat your vegetables and then you get dessert, this is what you are doing for the team. Not all parts of the role will be inspiring and fun but everyday there will be something you love to do which means I eat my vegetables as fast as possible so I can get to dessert faster!
The consistency factor ensures that the team are motivated not just today but everyday, so look for small ways everyday to tailor tasks to your teams strengths and motivations and then you wont be relying on pizza Tuesdays to get them to show up and be their best everyday.
