So you want to communicate to your team but it takes too long right? Wrong!
There are a few tips you can use to make sure you get your message across and understood in only 5 mins!
Be Clear – Before you even speak a word to your team you need to be really clear on the message you want to send and the WHY your team need to hear it, if you’re not clear they don’t have a hope of understanding it.
Outcome Focused – What is the outcome you want to reach from, communicating at all? If this has anything to do with venting or letting them know how you feel, think again before opening your mouth as your outcome may not get you what you want and may push your team away from you. If the outcome is to help the customer or increase team engagement then you know the team do need to hear this.
1 Sentence – Keep the main focus of your comms to 1 clear sentence and write it down to keep you on track. Often leaders can so focused on communicating they lose sight of what it is they are trying to get across and this ends up just sounding like you like the sound of your own voice and the true message is lost.
Plan it! – Now you have the key pieces pull it together and plan the best way to engage with the team, is it email, phone call, skype or old fashioned face to face, or even after hours over a pizza. With your outcome in mind you can ensure you stay focused to keep it simple and not get side tracked by anything else. Picking the right medium is vital to success as with everyone feeling time poor if you call a meeting when an email would do people feel cheated and lose trust is not only you as a leader but the organisation as a whole.
So to get a message to your team in 5 minutes it takes you as a leader to plan and prepare ahead of time to save your team time so instead of deciphering the message they can focus on their role in making the business a success.
