Welcome to this week’s Retail Leadership Tip Blog. Let’s talk about meetings. All businesses have them and most of us don’t enjoy them. So let’s talk about how we can make meetings better, easily get our team involved AND save lots of time in the process.
A lot of the time in a lot of meetings there is one or two people that do most of the pre-work and the post-work for the meeting. And then the same one or two people who does most of the talking during the meeting as well. So if you’re a leader where, you run every meeting and you collect all the data and you do all the follow up, you are actually making life super hard for yourself and disengaging your team in the process! I mean really, who wants to go to a meeting where they wonder, if they actually need to be there at all? If this is you don’t worry the way to shift this is simple and effective.
The way you actually Get Your Team Wanting To Come To A Meeting Is Get Them Involved.
As humans, we want to be places where we feel valued. And if I’m coming to a meeting and I’m listening, I’m taking notes, but I’m doing nothing else, I don’t feel like it’s valuable for me to be there and I don’t feel valued myself.
So one of the easiest ways that you can get your team wanting to come to meetings and taking the action you need, pre and post meetings, is to get them involved. Start splitting up the task. Start getting people to come back and deliver to the meeting. Start getting people to do research before the meeting. Give people tasks to do after the meeting and get them to talk about it at the next meeting.
Get your team involved in whatever shape or form you can, and get them to actually use their skill set. If you know someone is amazing with Excel, then get them to utilize that. If you know someone is amazing with your customers, get them to utilize that. Get them to talk about that, and get them to bring tools and tips and things that are working for them that they can share with the whole team. Involvement is key in meetings to actually get people to be there on time and to participate and take action afterwards. Once the team starts to be involved not only do the meetings improve but the actions post meeting do as well! Start looking at your meetings as development opportunities instead of blocks of lost time. Meetings can be powerful if run well.
