One of the biggest challenges Leaders face is starting. Starting a new team, a new team member or even a new arm of a team.
So many Leaders that I speak to believe the only way to succeed is to either do everything themselves or learn through trial and error. Even that there is no way to set the success path before the team starts but, that’s just not true!
You don’t have to waste time and resources learning hard lessons of what not to do, there is a simple way to start the right way and help your team succeed. A Plan.
How many members of your team have a plan, with clear goals and milestones to help keep them focussed to get there? If the answer is uncomfortable you are not alone, many leaders haven’t found this missing piece either, so where do you start? Start with asking “What do you what to achieve?” If you don’t know where you are going how can you get there? This question can be asked even before your team member starts, you as the leader need to be clear what path you see for this person BUT and it’s a BIG BUT you MUST then ask your team member What they want to achieve before you start building the plan otherwise there is no ownership or drive from the team member to take action and that is a sure fire way to fail before you even start.
Once you both know where you want to get to, it’s time to break this down into milestones along the way and start building the journey all the way back to where you are right now.
But this doesn’t have to be a complicated task, start with skills or tasks that are needed to get to the goal, for example:
If I want to achieve a team of 10 under them some of the skills/ tasks might include:
– Understanding the prospect / team building process
– Building confidence to engage new people
– Understanding the business compensation plan
– Knowing how to start and nurture a new team member
– Maintaining a team etc, etc
Once you have some key skills you can start to break these down into a plan of action and goals and work on them with your team member and track their progress and success towards reaching this overall goal. Rewarding success is vital to building momentum and drive so don’t forget to celebrate all the wins along the way not just reaching the overall goal.
