Most Leaders agree building accountability within a team takes time, but if you are new to leading teams or haven’t started building this where do you even start?
Accountability 101 starts with goals, and not just your goals but team goals. So how do you build a team goal?
As a leader you know where you want the team to go next but how you get there is where the team comes in. Many leaders are afraid to open to the team and ask, if we want to get to here whats the best way we can get there?
Think about it this way, if you are in a car and someone is driving and they know the way, how attentive or involved are you in the journey? You’re probably looking out the window, or checking your phone or even picking the music but you are not even remotely interested in the route the driver is taking. BUT if you have been designated as the navigator even if you have the gps set you are still reviewing the route checking to make sure the driver makes turns and discussing the progress and timing of the trip the whole way.
This is the difference between a Leader setting the goals and actions and a Leader setting the goal and asking how will WE get there, just like that its a team journey not only the leaders journey.
As a leader this can be letting go of your idea of how it is meant to look to get to that destination, and be open to new ideas and be willing to show your team the same trust you want from them and try something new. The worst thing that can happen is it doesn’t work and you all try again, but even during this process the team is growing together and as a leader you are creating accountability.
